Harbin Ice Festival 4D

Harbin is the rare Chinese city that sells on a season rather than a monument. From mid-December it builds an entire city out of river ice, and this itinerary keeps that at the centre while still making room for why an ice city exists here at all — a border town laid out by Russian railway engineers, whose Orthodox domes, Art Nouveau frontages and Chinese Baroque facades are all still standing. Three nights, one hotel, nothing longer than a twenty-minute drive.

Day by day

1. 1

   Day 1 — Arrive Harbin

   Met at the airport and transferred into the city · If the flight lands early, Zhaolin Park is worth an hour — the ice lantern tradition started here in 1963 and the park still lights them the old way rather than at stadium scale.

2. 2

   Day 2 — Old Harbin on foot, then the ice city

   Walk the Daoli quarter from Central Street, a kilometre of Russian and Art Nouveau frontages · The 1906 Modern Hotel, still trading and still marble · Down to the frozen Songhua and the flood memorial · The green domes of St Sophia, now an architecture museum rather than a working church · Into Ice and Snow World in the late afternoon, deliberately before the lights come up, so you see the ice as ice and then as a light show.

3. 3

   Day 3 — Snow sculpture and Chinese Baroque

   Cross the river to Sun Island for the snow sculpture expo — the festival's other half, worked in packed snow rather than cut ice · Harbin Museum, in the old municipal buildings · The Daowai blocks in the afternoon, where 1920s Chinese merchants copied the Baroque frontages from across the tracks and stitched pomegranates, bats and peonies into them.

   Day 4 — Depart Harbin

   Transfer for your onward flight · If the schedule allows, either the Unit 731 site museum or an hour of curling with a coach, both about fifty minutes from the terminal.
