Overview

What this journey is

Yabuli has hosted an Asian Winter Games, a National Winter Games and a Winter Universiade, and it has the vertical to justify all three: 912 metres of it, across fifty-six runs. Most operators give it half an afternoon and then write four hundred words about the trail count, which satisfies nobody. We give it a full day plus the arrival afternoon, then move on over the rime-lined road locals call the Ten-Mile Ice Gallery to Snow Town, where the snow settles on the timber roofs in the shapes that made the village famous.

Day by day

  1. 1

    Day 1Arrive Harbin

Met at the airport and transferred into the city · Zhaolin Park and its ice lanterns if the afternoon is free.

  2. 2

  4. 4

    Day 4Harbin to Yabuli

Check out and drive roughly three hours east · The afternoon is on the snow · The resort was cut in 1974 for competition training because the altitude, the snowfall and the drop were all already here; Russian surveyors had named the place after its apple trees eighty years earlier.

  5. 5

Day 5Yabuli: a full day on the mountain

Fifty-six runs across two 5S and two 3S areas, more than ninety kilometres of piste, twenty-five lifts and a top-to-bottom drop of 912 metres — the longest single run is five kilometres. Instruction and rental arranged to the level of the group, from first-timers to people who want the certified pistes.

  6. 6

Day 6Ten-Mile Ice Gallery and Snow Town

Out over the road that runs at about 1,300 m below Heilongjiang's highest peak, where two metres of annual snowfall and the right kind of cold turn every tree along it to rime · A forest trail from the roadside reaches the top in about ninety minutes for anyone who wants to walk it · Into Snow Town — formally Shuangfeng forest farm — in the afternoon.

  7. 7

    Day 7Snow Town to Harbin

The village in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive and while the light is still low on the roofs · Four and a half hours back to Harbin · Evening free.

  8. 8

    Day 8Depart Harbin

Transfer for your onward flight, with the Unit 731 site museum or an hour of curling as options.

Operational notes

The things worth raising before you quote it, not after.

  • Snow Town accommodation is village guesthouse standard — heated kang beds, simple bathrooms. Guests carrying the Harbin hotel standard in their heads need telling in advance.
  • Lift passes, equipment rental and instruction at Yabuli are quoted separately from the land package.
  • Snow Town fills with domestic groups from late morning. The village is at its best before ten and after four, which is why we overnight rather than day-trip.
  • Rime on the Ice Gallery road is weather-dependent, as is the walk up from it.
  • Sample itinerary. Dates, hotel ladder and net rates are quoted against your brief.
