What to do
- Walk a temple fair (庙会) in the first three days — Ditan and Longtan in Beijing are the classics.
- Watch a lion dance outside a shop on its reopening day; the business pays for luck and the street gets the show.
- Accept a red envelope if one is offered. Refusing is the rude move.
Eat — Dumplings in the north, sticky rice cake (年糕) in the south, and a whole fish that is deliberately not finished — the leftover is the point, 年年有余.
