Huangshan

Huangshan has been written into landscape painting for so long that standing at Beihai you can misread it for a moment: the pines and granite were not an exaggeration of the brush. When the sea of cloud arrives, the mountain only shows its shoulders.

Where

Huangshan, Anhui

Season

April–May · September–November

Stay

Two nights on the mountain

The Guest-Greeting Pine sits beside Yuping Tower, photographed into a pose, and still worth seeing once: its roots are in a crack of granite. Shixin Peak, the 'brush stand', Flying Rock — the names sound like miniatures; walking them is steps and wind.

You stay on the mountain for two lights: sunset and sunrise. The sea of cloud is not daily. It depends on humidity and wind. On a clear day the bone of the rock is clearer. Rain is worth it too; the needles shine.

Do not assault Huangshan. The cable car solves the height. The actual trip happens in the twenty minutes of path between viewpoints. Put the phone down once and let your eyes adjust to ink.

What to do

  • Stay on the summit overnight. The day-trippers leave, the cloud sea forms at dawn, and this is the only way to see it.
