Zhangjiajie

The quartz-sandstone forest of Wulingyuan is not one mountain. It is three thousand. They rise vertically out of subtropical green, and cloud moves between the pillars as if someone had turned the strata ninety degrees.

Where

Zhangjiajie, Hunan

Season

April–June · September–November

Stay

Three to four days

The Avatar viewpoint at Yuanjiajie is only a doorway. What is worth walking is the flat path of Golden Whip Stream, and the hanging fields at Yangjiajie. Glass walkways and the Grand Canyon glass bridge are a thrill; the real shock is where there is no glass — the depth between peaks.

Tianmen Mountain is a different system: cableway, hairpin road, Heaven's Gate. The hole is a door the mountain was cut by water and time. When cloud pours, the gate looks like it opens onto another season.

The park is large. Queues are real. Go in early, change lines less, and give a day to one stream. That is closer to the forest than ticking every platform.

What to do

  • Wulingyuan for the pillars and Tianmen Mountain for the cliff road are two separate days and both are worth it.
