What this journey is
Guizhou's ethnic-minority culture is usually sold as a stop: an hour in a village, a staged song, back on the coach. This does the opposite. Guests stay in Huanggang across the run-up to the Hantian festival, when the village is busy preparing rather than performing — costumes being finished, choirs rehearsing after dark, kitchens working late — and are there at dawn when the ceremonies begin. The Dong polyphonic choir tradition is UNESCO-listed and, sung in its own drum tower, sounds nothing like the concert-hall version.

Day 1 — Arrive Guiyang, transfer to Huanggang
Met at Guiyang airport and driven out through karst hills and terraced paddy to Huanggang · A Dong settlement known for its wooden drum towers, indigo cloth and layered choral singing · Settle in while the village is already preparing.

Day 2 — Festival preparations and village life
The day the other itineraries miss · Families assembling ritual offerings, elders running through sacred songs, women finishing costumes · Photograph the drum tower and meet the singers and their teacher · Traditional pipa in the afternoon · After dark the village keeps working — decorating, rehearsing, cooking — and guests are in it rather than watching it.

Day 3 — Hantian festival
Begin at dawn with the ancestral rituals and the presentation of offerings · The square fills with Dong polyphonic singing, several parts at once and no conductor · Lusheng dancers process through the stone lanes in full dress · Long-table banquet with local families, then catching fish in the paddies and folding dumplings · At nightfall, a bonfire at the drum tower with singing that carries into the hills.

Day 4 — Basha Miao village, or return to Guiyang
Option to visit Basha, a Miao community that kept its ceremonial firearms and its distinctive topknot, before returning to Huanggang · Otherwise transfer back to Guiyang (3.5 hours) for your onward flight.

- Accommodation standard is the trade-off for the access. Guests expecting a five-star bathroom should be routed elsewhere — brief this clearly at the sales stage.
- The festival follows the lunar calendar, so departure dates are fixed by it and confirmed roughly a year ahead.
- Photography of rituals is welcomed but negotiated by our guide with the village, not assumed. Commercial and documentary shoots need separate clearance.
- Village capacity is genuinely limited. Group size caps low and books out early.
