What this journey is
Wuzhen is two scenic areas with one name. East Gate is the older, tighter half — Ming and Qing houses, stone bridges, the canal and the alleys — and it is what a day trip is built around. West Gate is larger, later restored, and comes into its own after dark, which a day trip out of Shanghai cannot reach. The drive is the longest of the single water-town days, so the day runs nine to ten hours door to door.

Operational notes
The things worth raising before you quote it, not after.
- Say at quote stage whether you want East Gate or West Gate. They are ticketed separately and West Gate costs more.
- West Gate is really an overnight — its lighting is the point, and a day trip from Shanghai has to leave before it.
- The two-day Hangzhou pairing takes East Gate on the way and sleeps in Hangzhou.
- Rates do not apply over the China International Import Expo or Chinese New Year. Other major trade fairs are usually fine at more than a month's notice.
- Booked inside a fair week, vehicles and guides get scarce and pricing moves with the market.
- Large groups may need a luggage vehicle, which is quoted on top.
- An evening meal or an evening activity adds a guide and vehicle surcharge.
