Zhouzhuang Water Town 1D

Shanghai·Zhouzhuang

  • Day trip
  • Full day
  • 2 places

Overview

What this journey is

Zhouzhuang bills itself as the first water town in China and has the buildings to argue it. The Twin Bridges are the Shide and Yong’an bridges, joined since the late Ming and made famous by Chen Yifei’s 1984 painting. Shen’s House was built for the family of Shen Wansan, the Ming merchant the town’s wealth is attributed to; Zhang’s House keeps its private garden. The day includes a paper-cutting session rather than leaving the afternoon to shopping. It is further out than Zhujiajiao and priced accordingly.

Operational notes

The things worth raising before you quote it, not after.

  • Ticketing in Zhouzhuang comes in more than one form and the paper-cutting session is not always in it. Confirm at quote stage which version you are buying.
  • Longer on the road than Zhujiajiao — the difference is roughly an hour each way.
  • Suzhou is close enough that the two-day version stays overnight there instead of driving back.
  • Rates do not apply over the China International Import Expo or Chinese New Year. Other major trade fairs are usually fine at more than a month's notice.
  • Booked inside a fair week, vehicles and guides get scarce and pricing moves with the market.
  • Large groups may need a luggage vehicle, which is quoted on top.
  • An evening meal or an evening activity adds a guide and vehicle surcharge.
