Overview
What this journey is
Zhujiajiao is the water town Shanghai keeps for itself — about an hour from the centre, and a market village from the Three Kingdoms period that became a trading town under the Ming. What survives is the fabric: Ming and Qing houses, arched stone bridges, flagstone lanes and the boats. Most Shanghai itineraries give it the middle of a day. This one gives it the whole of one, which is the difference between walking the town and photographing the first bridge.

Operational notes
The things worth raising before you quote it, not after.
- The town itself can be walked without tickets, but the minor sites are most of what there is to see. We quote with them included; say if you want them out.
- Further afield than it looks on a map at weekends — Shanghai traffic, not distance, is what moves the return time.
- Zhouzhuang is the bigger, further version of the same day if the client wants the Shen and Zhang houses.
- Rates do not apply over the China International Import Expo or Chinese New Year. Other major trade fairs are usually fine at more than a month's notice.
- Booked inside a fair week, vehicles and guides get scarce and pricing moves with the market.
- Large groups may need a luggage vehicle, which is quoted on top.
- An evening meal or an evening activity adds a guide and vehicle surcharge.
